MEDIA OBITUARYZirah LeFevre Bednar, 95, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, January 8, 2014, in a nursing center in George West, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 14th and Main Church of Christ, Big Spring with Rick Cunningham, officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park, Big Spring.The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.Zirah Lea Patton was born September 28, 1918, in Callahan County, Texas, to Wesley and Dessie Patton. She then moved to the Big Spring area and attended Moore School, graduating from Big Spring High School.In 1937 she married Richard “Dick” LeFevre, with whom she had three children: LeRoy, and twins Jay and Zay. Her husband died in 1945, and she raised her children with the help of her parents. Her children all preceded her in death. In 1970, she married Edwin Bednar, who died in 2004.She worked for the Big Spring Police Department as a dispatcher and also attended Howard College. She spent years working as a dress finisher with her mother who was a professional seamstress. In 1960 she ran for and was elected as the County Tax Collector/Assessor for Howard County; she served in this capacity until 1980 when she retired to care for an aging parent.Zirah was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Altrusa Group (Ladies Rotary), and served as Chair of the Howard County Council on Aging for two years.She was a member of the 14th and Main Church of Christ for approximately 85 years. She served for fifteen years in the Cradle Roll department and also spent a lot of time helping in the church’s kitchen. Her desire to walk daily with the Lord was a shining example to all.Survivors include Michelle Dixon, granddaughter; Dianna LeFevre, granddaughter; Richard LeFevre, grandson; Jeffrey LeFevre, grandson; and Jennifer Bernal, granddaughter; 11 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and brother; two husbands; her three sons; and one grandchild.
