Yvonne Brooks, long-time resident of Midland, Texas, passed away on May 12, 2026.
She was born December 2, 1937, to Arthur Lee King and Lena Chesshir King at the family home near Mt. Vernon, Texas. Yvonne moved to Midland with her family when she was 16. She graduated from Midland High School in 1956.
In 1962, she married Harold Don Brooks. Yvonne fell in love with her in-laws before she fell for Don. She never had a cross word with his parents, and they lived next door to each other for the better part of the 60 years. That love extended from Don to the King family as well.
In 1958, Yvonne started to work for The Atlantic Refining Company, as a steno-clerk in the Drilling/Production Department. Over the next 36 years she worked in the Legal Department, Land Department, Gas Coordination, and was Administrative Assistant to the Permian District Vice President for 13 years. After her retirement from ARCO in 1994, she went back to work for the company as a contract employee in Gas Coordina7on and worked another five years.
Yvonne was a volunteer loan officer for the Midland Atlantic Federal Credit Union prior to it becoming My Community Credit Union. She was a member of Desk and Derrick for several years and was very active in the ARCO Retiree Club. She devoted 5000 volunteer hours to Midland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served as board member for the MMH Auxiliary.
Yvonne was a member of the Ft. Worth and Jax Street Church of Christ where she taught Bible class for four-year-olds and helped organize and print the weekly bulletin. She has been a member of the Golf Course Road Church of Christ since 1965. At GCR she was actively involved in the Children’s Ministry as teacher and the “official hugger” and “dryer of tears” in the four-year-old class for many years. She also worked in the Funeral Meal Ministry, the Benevolent Ministry, the Sunday morning Greeter Ministry, substituted in the church office on several occasions, and was active in her small group Sunday night Bible study and the Tuesday morning Ladies Bible Class.
Yvonne is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, her parents, brother Bob King, sisters-in-law Marie King, Lois King, Virginia Lamay and Grace Brooks, brother-in-law Kent Brooks. She is survived by her two sons, Kenneth Brooks of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Kelly Brooks of Austin, Texas; two grandsons, Geoffrey Brooks of Austin, Texas, and Oliver Brooks of Lubbock, Texas; brothers Thomas King and wife Suzie of Andrews, Texas, and Dwayne King and wife Joanna of Rogers, Texas. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and their spouses, many cousins, and faithful friends who have been an encouragement.
Memorial services will be held at Nalley Pickle-Welch Funeral Home on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 10:00 AM. A light lunch buffet will be served afterwards. Yvonne will be cremated, so in place of flowers, please consider a donation to the Midland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary by calling 432-221-1542
