Mark H. Bryant LtCol, USMC (Retired) left a message on May 4, 2022:
Many people will come into this world and cannot honestly leave confident that they made a difference - William Austin Womack can without even blinking an eye. I knew the minute I met him while I was standing behind the counter at the Albertsons Deli in Lubbock, Texas that THIS was a special man. Even before I learned that he had served in WWII and liberated Jews from Nazi Concentration Camps I knew. It was his handshake, his eye contact, and his contagious curiosity expressed by a slight cock of his head. Once I got to know him, there was NO DOUBT in my mind that if I was ever blessed with a son I would name that son after him - Which I did. I recall our conversations early in my Marine Corps career, and the valuable lessons that propelled me forward for 30 years, even when I was the most physically, emotionally, and intellectually drained - one more step. I recall learning about honey bees, how to harvest their honey, and enjoy that sweet taste. So many memories and so little space to share the lessons that I have never forgotten - many of which I will carry with me to my grave and until we meet again. I have always felt as though I failed him in some ways. A true, unquestioned hero in so many ways. It was a privilege to know him. Hand salute; 21 Guns; Fair winds and following seas; Go forward and rejoin your beloved Char William Austin Womack. I will never forget you.
