William Streater “Bill” Kirby, 71, of Midland, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on February 9, 1955, in Panola County, Texas, to Ruth Marie Kirby and Lawrence William Kirby, Bill spent his career in the oil and gas industry. He was known for his thoughtful friendship, his deep love of golf and the time spent playing it with friends, and his dedication to helping youth discover the sport. Those who knew him also remember him as a man of uncommon reliability—someone who always showed up and followed through.
Bill held a lifelong passion for golf and for sharing it with others. In retirement he founded and served as executive director of First Tee of West Texas, introducing countless young people in Midland County to the sport and to the life principles it teaches—integrity, perseverance, respect, and more. He believed deeply that golf could shape character and open doors for the next generation.
He also worked closely with city staff, community members, and City Council members to bring a fresh vision to Hogan Park Golf Course. His creativity and determined efforts helped spark a renewed commitment to improving the community’s course. The renovations now underway at Hogan Park stand as a lasting tribute to his advocacy and hard work on behalf of public golf in Midland.
Bill is survived by his goddaughter, Dusty Olson, who was the daughter he chose and who chose him in return; her husband, Travis Olson; their children, Joan and Lisa Olson; his lifelong best friend, Lisa Rhodes; and many loving friends.
A service will be held at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Tee of West Texas or to a charity of one’s choice.
