William C. Dempsey, Jr., 92, of Midland, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017. No services are scheduled.William was born on Dec. 22, 1924, to Mary and William Curtis Dempsey, Sr., in Little Rock, Arkansas. During World War II, he was assigned to the 330th Bomb Group 458 Squadron and was sent to Walder Air Base at Victoria, Kansas. He was made a radar mechanic for the AN/APQ-13 radar on B-29s and served in Guam. After the war, he graduated from University of Arkansas and worked for Southwestern Electric Power Company as an electrical engineer until he retired after 38 years. He and his wife, Gladys, met at the university and were avid Razorback sports fans.The couple lived in Marshall, Mount Pleasant, San Angelo, and Midland, Texas, throughout their 64-year marriage. While working at SWEPCO, he became a licensed Professional Engineer and also a senior IEEE member.While attending the Presbyterian church, he was ordained as a deacon and as an elder. He also enjoyed working in service clubs. He was an Optimist Club member and served as president one year. Later he became a Kiwanian in both Marshall and Mount Pleasant where he also served a term as president.He loved lifetime sports and games. He played tennis into his 70s, golf into his 80s, and was always serious about bridge or chess. Fishing and small game hunting were also favorite past-times.He is survived by his children and their spouses: Mary Beth and Jay Isacks, Bill and Nora Dempsey, Barbara and Christopher Cherry, and Kenneth and Amanda Dempsey, nine grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. After a serious illness in 2016, he worked hard to heal and to return to his friends at Polo Park Retirement Home.He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and sister.In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be donated to The Presbyterian Children's Home and Services in Austin, Texas.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
