Wendel Thomas Payte, age 73 years, while surrounded by his wife and children, went to be with our Father in Heaven on January 7, 2008.Family will receive visitors at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, January 8th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Memorial services will be held at Birdwell Lane Church of Christ on Wednesday, January 9th at 4:00 PM. A private family burial will be held at a later date.Wendel was born on May 24, 1934 to Carmen and Mary Payte in Boswell, Oklahoma.He married the love of his life, Wynona Duke, on June 2, 1958. They have been long time members of Birdwell Lane Church of Christ.He honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1953 to 1957. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1993 after 36 years. He was a Little League coach for many years and he loved to bowl.He was preceded in death by his mother and father, one brother, Mike Payte, one grandson, Jason Horton, and beloved friend Patsy Pettitt.He is survived by Wynona, his loving wife of 50 years; three daughters, Wendy Horton, and husband, Jeff of Grand Prairie, Wakenda Dunlap and husband, Gerald, Wylene Landrum and husband, Jay, and one son, Whitney Payte and wife, Brenda all of Big Spring; ten grandchildren, Nikki Pickett and husband, Randy, Jeremy Green and wife, Heather, Travis Long and fiance, Mandy, Brandi Dunlap, Kendel Light, Brendan Payte, Justin Payte, Emily Landrum, Britney Payte, and Payte Landrum; two great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Pickett and Kyleigh Green and life long friends, Leeon Pettitt and wife, Donna, and Debbie and Aline Legg. He is also survived by two sisters, Joyce and Louise of Springdale, Arkansas and several nieces and nephews.Honorary pallbearers will be Jeremy Green, Travis Long, Brendan Payte, Justin Payte, and Randy Pickett.The family suggests memorials be made to Howard College Scholarship Fund, 1001 Birdwell Lane, Big Spring, Texas 79720 or the American Cancer Society, % Carolyn Brooks, PO Box 2121, Big Spring, Texas 79721-2121.Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring. To Wynona and all of the Payte's: I was saddened to hear of Uncle Wendel's passing. I have few memories of Wendel but the few I have are good ones. I know that my father and Wendel were fond of each other. It is hard to find the words to say. I have always felt a void in my life that I have a family that shares my name so close but yet we never spent time together. Even though I only saw Wendel a couple of times in my life; I have always kept him and his family close to my heart. That sentiment holds true today. Wynona: You, your children, grandchildren, family and friends are in my wife's and my prayers. I regret that I never got to know Wendel more than I did; but I rest easy knowing that he is in a better place. I can only pray that we will all see him again in that place. I pray that the Lord's comforting arms are surrounding all of those close to Wendel. God Bless.

Dear Payte Family I am so sorry to hear of Wendel passing. I am proud to have been one of the "kids" that Wendel impacted while coaching baseball. I will never forget the "STARS" and the many ballgames I saw Wendel getting more out of kids that werent very good and making them better ballplayers and people. The good times back in the early 60's at the ball park and practice field and Wendels influence made me a better person. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mom called to say she had read of your Dad's passing and it brought back memories of his delivering our mail and us playing when we were little. It was great to read about his wonderful life and loving family. My dad died 5 years ago and I know how you feel. Wynona, You and your family are on of the sweetest it has been my pleasure to meet. Although the only time I got to speak to you and Wendel was at church service, I thought a lot of you and Wendel. I loved his song leading, I thought it was great. You could tell he loved singing, cause he would sing even when he could'nt get his breath. God bless you all, Brenda Lawson

We remember Wendel and his wife from our early days in Big Spring and we attended Birdwell Lane ourselves. He has gone home to be with his Lord. I pray his family has peace in knowing that we knew him and his wife as good christian folks, and were really nice to be aroun. I was an officer with the PD for several years. May God embrace and hold all of you in his arms of strength and peace. The bob lester family.
