Vernon Walters, 86, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, March 2, 2003, in a local hospital. Graveside funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Mt Olive Memorial Park with Rev. Walter McCall, chaplain with Odyssey Hospice, officiating. He was born on December 27, 1916 in Simpson County, Mississippi and married Pauline Batemen on September 17, 1955 in Greenville, Mississippi. Vernon had lived in Big Spring since 1974. He was an automotive mechanic for 51 years. He enjoyed gardening, working with animals, reading and loved his family. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, from 1940 to 1945. He was a Sergeant and served in the Pacific Theatre at Iwo Jima, Guadacanal and Bougainville. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Walters of Big Spring; his daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Scott Lindsey of San Angelo; two grandchildren, Tanner Gross and Chelsea Meyer both of San Angelo; one brother, Exvelon Walters of Jackson, Mississippi; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce and Gene Schell of San Diego, California and one brother-in-law, Albert Bateman of Big Spring.
