Vera Fulk Sawyer Bernacki, 93, of Big Spring, a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died on Monday, May 12, 2003, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Dr. Dave Ring, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland at 4:00 PM. Vera was born on August 23, 1909 in Hugoton, Kansas to Daisy Kasson Fulk and James M. Fulk. She graduated from high school at Mulvane, Kansas in 1927. She was afflicted with polio shortly afterward and was told by doctors that she would never walk again. However, after six months of bed confinement and physical rehabilitation, she overcame the obstacle and recovered the ability to walk. Vera married Kenneth L. Sawyer on July 22, 1928 in Derby, Kansas. Kenneth was a major oil company employee and was transferred to several communities in Kansas and Oklahoma before being re-located to Midland in 1966. Kenneth and Vera were members of Saint Lukes United Methodist Church in Midland. Kenneth preceded her in death in 1969. She then married Adolf Bernacki in 1978 in Midland; he preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two infant children. She moved to Big Spring in 1993 and became a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Philathea Sunday School Class. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Charles Beil of Big Spring; three granddaughters and their husbands, Beverly Beil Newsom and Dr. Gary D. Newsom of Lubbock, Brenda Beil Payne and Gary A. Payne of Sugar Land, and Charlotte Beil Wilhoit and Jon S. Wilhoit of Marietta, Georgia; six great granddaughters; one great grandson; three nieces and one nephew.Pallbearers will be Gary D. Newsom, Gary A. Payne, Hayes Stripling, Delbert Donelson, Ron Logback and Ladd Smith.Honorary pallbearers will be Jon S. Wilhoit, Al Valdez, Bobby Hill, Jimmy Anderson, Auriel Lafond, Gary Donelson and Bob Lewis. The family suggests memorials to The Outreach Trust of the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1229, Big Spring, Texas 79721 or the Big Spring Area Community Foundation, P.O.
