Velma R. (Nurse) Wood, 86, of Coahoma, Texas, died Friday, November 9, 2012, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 12, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Coahoma. Interment will follow at Coahoma Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. She was born September 23, 1926, in Coahoma, Texas and married Roney Lathan Wood May 26, 1946 in Coahoma, Texas. He preceded her in death October 27, 1989.A lifelong resident of Coahoma, Velma was a registered nurse working at Malone & Hogan for 10 years and was the school nurse at Coahoma ISD for 23 years. She played piano for 77 years starting at age 6 and had taught piano for 48 years. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved cooking for her family and enjoyed crocheting hangers.Velma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coahoma and had taught Sunday School. She enjoyed visiting the sick and doing missionary work.Survivors include two sons, Roney L. Wood, Jr. of Haltom City and Norman R. Wood and wife, Mary of League City; one daughter, Nancy Ruthe Doss and husband, Joe of Amarillo; a granddaughter raised as her own, Suzanna Dean Wells and husband, Jarod of Coahoma; three sisters, Margie Hill and husband, Bobby and Darla Swindell and husband, Johnny all of Big Spring and Katherine Roberts and husband, Clayton of Odessa; one brother, Fred Woodson of California; four grandchildren,Keith Wood, Kristie Wood, Karrie Wood and Justin Doss; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah Wells, Landon Wells and Trinity Lugo.She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Milton \Dean\ Wood; four brothers, Walter Woodson, Paul Woodson, Futhie Woodson and Murphy Woodson; and a sister, Freddye Britton.The family suggests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Coahoma, Mission Fund, P. Dearest Nancy & family, I can't remember a time growing up and attending Coahoma schools, that did not include your sweet mom. What a blessing she was throughout my life. I will never ever forget Mrs. Wood. What an awesome lady. She had a big impact on my life growing up at Coahoma Elementary. She always made me feel better no matter what! And sometimes I might have faked not feeling well just a little bit because I knew Mrs. Wood would give me a cracker to hold me over until lunch time!! Oh, great memories!! I am saddened to hear of her passing and I am praying for your family. We have a beautiful angel among us.

My thoughts and prayers are with each of you....I have so many precious memories of Velma Ruth. I know she will be missed by all that knew her. God Bless you & love to all.

We loved Nurse Wood. She was such a good, kind person. She took care of so many children and was such a blessing to them. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. I'm sure she will be missed very much.

Nurse Wood was a wonderful Christian lady who impacted my life and the lives of my siblings and children while we were in school at Coahoma and later. I will miss working with her on reunion and community functions. I was always amazed that she could remember the names of all those students from all those years. She will be missed but what a blessing she left with each of us.

What wonderful memories I have of Acteen Camp and Mrs. Wood being the camp nurse! She was a wonderful nurse and a true inspiration to those of us blessed to spend time with her. We want to express our sincere sympathy to your entire family.

Velma Ruth was a sweet, loving lady. She will be greatly missed. I'm so sorry for your loss.

What a blessing Mrs Woods was! She will be missed. She was an inspiration to those around her, she showed you how to be a good Christian by example. She will be missed. We are better people for knowing her.

Mrs. Wood will be missed. She was a wonderful Christian woman whose life and ministiries were mirrored after a Proverbs 31 woman. I strive to be even half of tge wonderful woman she was. Her memory and legacy will live on forever. Everytime I sit down to my paino I will always think of her. It is a blessing to know how happy she is dancing with her Lord and Savior in Heaven. I long for the day when I'll get to dance and sing with her on the streets of Heaven.
