Velma Lee Blagrave, 91, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, January 27, 2008, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rev. Dalton Froman, officiating and Rev. R. T. Havener, assisting. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.She was born on November 6, 1916, in Knott, Texas.Velma was a lifetime resident of Howard County, her parents were John Thomas and Martha Anne Blagrave, pioneer farmers in the Knott community. She attended East Texas State University, West Texas State University and Colorado State University in Greeley where she received her Master's Degree in English. She served as principal at the Brown Community School and taught school at Ackerly for 26 years and then taught in the Big Spring Independent School District for 26 years, before retiring. She was a member of First Assembly of God and a member of Texas Retired Teachers Association.Survivors include six nephews, Calvert Shortes, Jarrell Shortes, Derwood Blagrave, Douglas Blagrave, Dale Froman, Dalton Froman; and one niece, Gardine Froman.She was preceded in death by four brothers, James Blagrave, as an infant, Oscar T. Blagrave, Arthur R. Blagrave, Floyd L. Blagrave and two sisters, Sarah Shortes and Bertha Froman.
