Roger Plew left a message on September 11, 2024:
This man was an iconic West Texas sports writer, spending his entire career after military service with the Big Spring Herald. He gave the Big Spring Steers and Howard College Hawks (then HCJC Jayhawks) incredible coverage. He began as a carrier for the Herald and retired as the newspaper's editor. He succeeded a very good sports writer in Jack Douglas and was fortunate enough to be at the Herald for the final year of Peppy Blount's high school athletic career. His column, "Looking Them Over" was an incredible source of information that few (if any) other sports writers could gather and have the courage to write. And his game reports were superbly written. He covered Big Spring Steer athletics from Peppy Blount's senior year, 1942-43, into the early 1970's--with tremendous input to the newspaper's outstanding sports coverage as editor. He provided the scoop on incredible Big Spring High athletes including Blount, Cliff Patton, Ike Robb, Frosty Robison, Charles Clark, Charley Johnson, Danny Birdwell, Jan Loudermilk, R.L. Lasater, Eddy Nelson, Charlie West, Benny Kirkland, Joe Juare, Robert Jackson, R.J. Englert, Ronnie Broadrick, James Newman, Linda Cathey Riley, Stewart Bunn, Dave Duncan and Howard Stewart, to cite a few.
