Tommie Nell Underwood went to rest peacefully on June 5, 2026, after a short illness. She was born on November 13, 1926, in Abilene, Texas, to Tom and Frankie Newman. She graduated from Abilene High School and attended Hardin-Simmons University.
Tommie and her husband Forrest L. Underwood lived in Midland for many years. While in Midland, she was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and a member of the Keystone Sunday School Class (Prime Timers). She was also a dedicated volunteer member of the Petroleum Museum Santa Rita Club of the Permian Basin. After moving to Austin, she was also an active member at St. John’s Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Terrie Bryant Whitehead and husband C. Robert Whitehead of Austin; her step-daughter, Linda Woolley of Columbia, Missouri; grandson Robert “Casey” Wright of Odessa; grandchildren Katie Zidek and husband Chris of Alexandria, Virginia, Margaret Bryant Adams and husband Joe of Phoenix, Arizona, and Claire Bryant Center of San Antonio; grandson Forrest Alden Woolley and wife Becky and daughter Madely; granddaughter Lori Mitchell and husband Chris of Missouri; daughter-in-law Pam Bryant of San Antonio; great-grandchildren Benjamin and William Center of San Antonio, Jeremy Woolley and wife Katelynn, Noah J. Cisneros son of Robert “Casey” Wright and Mary Jane Cisneros; great-great-grandchildren Gibson Mitchell, Mason Mitchell, Asher, Aria, and twins Emmett and Logan; great granddaughter Shawna Phillips and her husband Nick and their children Raidan and Persephone; great granddaughter Shania Whitehead; and numerous nieces and nephews from both marriages.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Forrest, her son Tom W. Bryant, her first husband, Winston W. Bryant, grandson Tommy Bryant, stepson Charles R. Whitehead, Jr., stepdaughter’s husband Mike Woolley, and her three sisters, Dorothy Patterson, Ethel Boyd, and Katie Poer.
Graveside services will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park, Midland, on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. for family and close friends. Memorials may be made to the Foundation Fund at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society, or to a charity of choice.
