Tom McGinnis passed away February 26, 2016 at Midland Memorial Hospital.Tom was born June 8, 1936 to Roger McGinnis and Gertrude McGinnis Buchannan in Oklahoma City. Tom married Betty McGinnis March 24, 1956 in Philadelphia and together they had three children.Tom proudly served his country during the Korean conflict as a sailor in the United States Navy. After his service in the Navy, he started a lifelong career in law enforcement. He served as a police officer for the City of Philadelphia from (1959 to 1962) before joining the United States Border Patrol. As a Border Patrolman, he was stationed in Falfurias Texas and later in Alpine Texas. After leaving the Border Patrol, Tom moved to Midland where he joined the Constable office. He served under Jack Merritt until his death. Tom then served as the Constable of Midland County from 1981 to 1988. After a brief retirement, Tom returned to Midland County and worked for the Sherriff’s department until 1993.Tom married Peggy Smith in 1987 and together they traveled many miles enjoying their life together. They were both avid divers and enjoyed diving excursions to Guam, Honduras and Hawaii. After retiring from the Sherriff’s department in 1993, the couple moved to Florida. Tom had an opportunity to sign on with an independent contractor to work in a security role for a military base in the Marshal Islands. Peggy and Tom enjoyed their years on these islands immensely. Upon returning to the states, they settled in Alabama until Peggy’s death in 2005. Tom returned to the Islands for a few years and then settled back in Texas around family.Tom is preceded in death by his wife Peggy, his parents, his brother Paul Buchannan and brother in law Jim Boyer.He is survived by his three children and their families along with two sisters, Matt and Susie McGinnis of Corsicana, Kathy McGinnis of Merkel, and Don and Sherri McGinnis of Ft Davis. Surviving grandchildren are Kathy and Danny Olney and children McKayla, Gaven and WhitLee, Jennifer McGinnis and son Landon, Amanda and Justin Agerton and children Jaycee, Bryson and CJ, Brian McGinnis, Wesley McGinnis and Brittney and Mike Reynolds and children Aubrey and Grayson. Surviving sisters are Peggy Boyer and Paulette Walker of Colorado. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Tom is also survived by his faithful companion Prissy.A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
