Steven Douglas (Steve) Howenstine, 72, of Midland, Texas, passed away August 28, 2026.

Steve was born on February 27, 1954, to Kenneth and Anna (Mays) Howenstine. His early years were spent on numerous U.S. Air Force bases. Upon his dad’s retirement from the military, they settled in Carrizo Springs, Texas. Steve graduated from Carrizo Springs High School in 1972. He obtained his BA in Aviation Management from UT Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas in 1979. Steve spent much of his career in the banking industry in Odessa, Midland, and San Antonio. He moved to Midland in 2008 to be near and spend time with family and friends.

Steve was predeceased by his parents, his only child Joe Douglas Howenstine, and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.

He is survived by his life partner Jeanie Gaubatz, her son Blake Gaubatz, and the mother of his son Gina Santos.

A memorial celebrating Steve’s life is planned for a later date.

I'm going to miss you, Heavy. Your sense of humor, always ready to go and do whatever, and more recently your texts about our political happenings. From our time at SWTJC to our graduation at UTPB, you, along with our DGP brothers, made college a great experience. We had many good times, bro. Thank you Jeannie for being his partner in life. I know he loved you dearly from the beginning.

Steve was a good friend, college roommate and fellow pilot. Lots of great times flying around Uvalde, Tx and midnight runs to San Antonio for breakfast. DGP forever! The memories we all share are forever an indelible part of our lives that have kept us together even while being apart for so many years. May you rest in peace and we shall meet again.

Steve my brother we had some times back in the day in Uvalde. Then on to Odessa where we had the bright idea to pull an American Graffiti move on the campus police car, until you whacked your head running into a concrete overhang. Failed miserably. Good thing probably! All the laughs watching SNL in the early UTPB days. I always knew I could count on you. Gonna miss you bro.
