Steve "Herman" Mize, 80, of Big Spring, passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2004, in a local nursing facility. He was surrounded by loving family members as he departed this old world for a better life with his Lord.Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 12, 2004 at Mt. Olive Memorial Park with Chaplain Walter McCall, with Odyssey Hospice, officiating.The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.Born on December 30, 1923, in Colorado City, Texas, to Kelly Marcus and Bertie Lee Adams Mize, he was the second of eight children. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend.Herman came to Big Spring from Colorado City. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1943 and from Texas Tech University in 1950. He had worked for the United States Postal Service retiring in 1977. Herman was inducted in to the Big Spring High School Hall of Fame on Ocotober 15, 1994.He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. He had served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II from June 18, 1943 to February 22, 1946. He is survived by two brothers, A. C. "Cotton" Mize and wife, Billie, of Big Spring and Joe H. Mize and wife, Betty, of Stillwater, Oklahoma; one sister, Shirley Holland and husband, Jim, of Brownwood; one brother-in-law, B. A. Patton of Terrell; one sister-in-law, Jerry Mize of Hamilton; numerous nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews.He has one special niece and husband, Jan and Pat Fortune of Midland who gave him unconditional love, understanding and comfort the last two years he was on this earth. He loved them both very much and there are no words to express the bond that was formed. He was more than blessed to have Jan and Pat there for him.He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert Lee Mize and Kelly Mize, Jr. and sisters, Zennuia Haston and Jane Patton. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made in his name to Odyssey Hospice of Big Spring, 1003 E.
