S. F. "Porky" Britton passed away Saturday, October 11, 2008, in Stanton. He was born December 13, 1941 to Souval and Mozell Smith Britton in Huntington Beach, California. The family moved to Martin County in 1946 to farm.Porky graduated from Stanton High School where he played football and was active in 4-H and the FFA. He was a bull rider and loved to "rodeo". He was studying veterinary medicine at Texas A&M University and was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets when he was involved in a debilitating automobile accident in November of 1961. He had been under nursing home care for the remainder of his life. Although his active life was abbreviated, Porky was a living testament to his faith and love of the Lord to everyone he met over the years.Mr. Britton was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his two sisters, Fran Rose and her husband Bennie, and Cindy Jenkins and her husband Scooter, of Midland, nieces Lauri Avery Barber and her husband Kelly of Covington, Louisiana, Melissa Avery Thompson and her husband, Mark of Butte, Montana, Robin Hill Burk and her husband Steve, of Hurst, Carly Jenkins of Austin, and nephews Brad Avery and his wife, Linda of Garden City, and Corey Jenkins of Lubbock. He is also survived by four great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great great niece and one great great nephew, one aunt and numerous cousins and friends.The family would like to thank the staff of Stanton Care and Rehabilitation Center for their many years of attention and care and Home Hospice of Big Spring. Funeral services are scheduled Monday, October 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Belvue Church of Christ in Stanton with Don Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton. The family will receive guests Sunday, Oct. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Gilbreath Funeral Home in Stanton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Porky Britton Scholarship Fund at Permian Basin Area Foundation, 200 N. Loraine, Suite 500, Midland, Texas 79701, or Gifts of Hope, 400 N.
