Longtime resident and early settler of the St. Lawrence farming community and St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Sidney Francis Hirt died at Polo Park Estates in Midland, TX on August 4, 2014 at the age of 88.A rosary will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 7:00 pm at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Funeral mass will at 10:00 am, Friday, August 8, 2014 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in St. Lawrence. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.Sidney was born December 11, 1925 to Frank and Alma (Niehues) Hirt in Olfen, TX. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sue Hirt, his mother and father, his sister, Jeanette Kohutek, and brother, Daniel Hirt. He attended Wall schools and graduated from Eola High School in 1943.Sidney was married to Agnes (Sue) Theresa Kleypas on April 7, 1947, and began farming tin Wall and working at the Wall Gin. He moved his family to St. Lawrence in 1955 until his retirement at the age of 70.While in St. Lawrence, he was an active member of his community. He played an integral role in getting an army surplus building moved from Midland airport to be used as the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He was on the founding committee of the National Cotton Council and was President of the St. Lawrence Men’s Society a number of years. He served on the Garden City School Board for 9 years as President and was active in the 4-H leadership in Glasscock County. He was very active in sports and played on a basketball team well into his thirties. Sidney won Texas Conservationist of the Year Award.Survivors include three sisters, Dorothy DeHaas (Bill), Marcie Batla (Delman), and Annette Frerich (Hubert); two brothers, Eugene (Dorothy) Hirt and Bernard (Jean) Hirt; four daughters, Judy Dalman (John) of North Richland Hills, TX, Lisa Miksch of Lavernia, TX, Becky West (Ira) of Del Rio, TX; two sons, Ronnie Hirt (Carla) of St. Lawrence, TX, and Steven Hirt (Millie) of Midland, TX; ten grandchildren, Jason Watts, Chris Watts, Heather Hirt Clark, Brazos Hirt, Christie Hirt Hinton, Cody Hirt, Micah Miksch, Sarah West Sigmon, Joshua Tanner, and Jarrod Tanner. He had 13 great grandchildren.The family would like to extend special thanks to Bobby Williams and Samantha Woods for the loving care they so graciously gave to Sidney during his final years. They would also like to thank Dr. Micheal Miller and Dr. Robert Vogel for their special care.Serving as pallbearers will be his grandchildren.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Lawrence Catholic Church Cemetery fund and EMS of Glasscock County.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
