Sharon Kay DeKoning, 73, of Midland passed away on November 25, 2016 after a yearlong battle with cancer. A Memorial Service will be held at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel on Monday February 29, 2016 at 7:30 PM and inurnment will be at the family plot in Enfield, New Hampshire at a future date.Sharon was born on October 31, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Clifton Rolla Walbridge of Enfield, New Hampshire and Ruth Esther Forbes Walbridge of Batavia, New York.Sharon received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and a Degree in Business from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.Sharon worked in the Psychology Department at Northwestern University for 5 years and then for the Materials Characterization Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania for 15 years. Sharon retired from academia in January 2001 to move to Midland, Texas and marry the love of her life and High School Sweetheart, Gerrit J. DeKoning. Sharon and Gary’s wedding vows were solemnized at the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico.Sharon and Gary loved to travel and when they were not “on the road” Sharon loved to immerse herself in reading and going to the movies and theater. A movie that Sharon and Gary went to see in High School, “Ben Hur” was her all-time favorite movie.Sharon is survived by her husband, Gerrit John DeKoning of Midland; a son, Adam M. Treiber of Frederick, Maryland; two brothers, Clifton Rolla Walbridge of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Marc Forbes Walbridge of Baltimore, Maryland; and three grandchildren, Joshua Treiber, William Treiber, and Kelsey Treiber of Frederick, Maryland; a niece, Amber Walbridge of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and a great niece, Ivy Krehoff, of Albuquerque, New Mexico.Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Clifton Rolla Walbridge and Ruth Forbes Walbridge.In lieu of flowers it is suggested that memorials be donated to Hospice of Midland and/or the American Cancer Society.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
