Sergeant Michael Joe Naylor, 46, of Midland, Texas, passed away on October 9, 2014, after serious injuries received while attempting to serve a criminal warrant. Sergeant Naylor’s final acts was doing what he enjoyed doing the most: serving and protecting the citizens of Midland County. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Joe Naylor.Mike was born on December 27, 1967, in Charleston , West Virginia, to Joe Naylor and Mary Miller (Harmon). After graduating from high school, Mike enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably for 26 years, and achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.Mike joined the Midland County Sheriff’s Department in 1999, working as a corrections officer. He was recalled back to active duty with the Air Force in 2001. Upon his discharge, he returned to Midland County, and became a full time Deputy Sheriff. Mike was instrumental in developing the Mental Health Unit, eventually becoming the Sergeant of the Unit. He was Commander over the Midland County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard, a position he held with honor as the Unit paid tribute to numerous fallen officers, firemen, veterans, and military personnel.Mike was also an Emergency Medical Technician.On March 13, 2011, he married the love of his life, Denise Davis. He cherished Denise and loved her with intensity, sharing their love for horses, and their life in their new home in the county. Mike attended Valley View Baptist Church, loving his church family.His hobbies included spending time on the shooting range, and riding horses with Denise. Michael was passionate about his service to Midland County, and will be remembered by many, including those that he had met during calls. He considered his fellow officers his second family, especially those of his Unit.Visitation will on Monday October 13th at 6pm to 8pm at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at Crestview Baptist Church in Midland at 10:00am. Burial will be at Prairie Haven Cemetery, at 3:00pm MST, in Hobbs, New Mexico. Reverend Robert Frasier will be officiating.Mike is survived by his loving wife, Denise, of Midland, Texas; his mother Mary Harmon of Greenwood, Texas; his father-in-law Mike Davis and wife Stacy; his brother–in-law Nathan Davis; nephews Stratton and Stryker Davis, and grandmother Doris Davis; mother in law Doris Parker and husband Buzz.Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
