Scott Wayne Tanberg, born April 11, 1949, passed peacefully on July 23, 2024. He is survived by his wife Chellye Tanberg, son Marc Tanberg, daughter Erin Lloyd, sister Carla Colvert, grandson Caleb Lloyd and son-in-law Mike Lloyd. He is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Lucille Tanberg.
Scott grew up in McAllen Texas where he and Chellye became high school sweethearts. After they got married in 1970 he kept her in stitches with his Aggie engineering when making repairs around the home. He served in the army and graduated from Texas A&M. He was a Geologist and self-proclaimed rock nerd and worked for several oil companies, finally working with long time friend Bob Landreth.
Scott was also a weather nerd, and he and son Marc would constantly keep in touch comparing how much rain each got in their rain gauge. He had a profound love for animals, which he shared with his sister Carla and daughter Erin. All his dogs were rescues, and he and Chellye often asked for dogs or cats that had been in shelters the longest or had medical needs. He had such a gentle heart, and couldn’t turn away a dog or cat if it showed up at his front porch.
In 2011 he was blessed with a grandson, and he was the proudest “Wai Gong” to his grandson Caleb. Caleb often earned the honor of being on Scott’s screensaver on his phone. Scott was an avid reader and loved the unknown, be it Bigfoot, UFOs or Skinwalker Ranch. He also had one of the most contagious laughs, and often laughed at himself. Scott was an amazing artist, and all family members were blessed to be gifted with his paintings. He mostly painted abstract, but would make exceptions to paint family members or favorite photos.
Scott always focused on his family, loved sharing old photos, and would spend his free time watching his digital picture frame. He was well known for his sweet tooth and once even purchased a full sheet cake for himself.
He will be greatly missed by his friends and family, and anyone who met him was better for having known him. As per Scott’s wishes, only a private family memorial will be held. If you wish to honor Scott’s memory, please consider donating to the Permian Basin Animal Advocates (PBAA) or the animal shelter of your choice.
