Sarah Margaret Davis, longtime resident of Midland, died on August 11, 2014.Born in Austin, Texas on May 19, 1924, Margaret was almost as proud of her Texas heritage as she was of her family. Her parents were Reece Meador and Minnie Lee Meador (nee Borden).Margaret married her high school sweetheart, Howard E. Davis, Jr. on her birthday in 1944 in Austin where she was attending the University of Texas. Completing their college at UT, Howard and Margaret moved to Midland in 1947, where Howard found employment as a geologist, and Margaret raised their four children. In 1974, Howard died and Margaret continued with her tasks of raising a family, operating oil properties, and running their beloved small ranch in the Hill Country.Margaret enjoyed her many years of membership in the Midland Junior League (devoting many hours to working at the “Next to New” shop), and her active participation in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, her bridge club, and the Midland Miniatures Club. She was also a 60-year member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon.Margaret’s life work, however, were her children and grandchildren. She drove across the state to attend her children’s graduations and weddings, and then when they had their own families, the birth, sporting events, graduations, and weddings of her grandchildren. As the list of grandchildren and great grandchildren grew, she nonetheless continued to send Valentines, Easter and birthday cards to each, rarely missing a one, and typically there was a special gift in each card, even if just a stick of gum. Her home was always a special place full of toys for her grandchildren and great grandchildren to visit.Margaret is survived by her four children: Karen Davis Love of Pandora, Texas; H. Scott Davis and his wife, Gretchen of Midland; Melissa Davis McGee and her husband, Mac of Midland; and Jonathan Davis and his wife, Ewa of San Angelo. She is also survived by her grandchildren Carmen Love Mero, Sara Margaret Hernandez, Susanna Love Smith, Margaret Davis Pape, Joseph S. Davis, Melissa McGee Ayoub, Nancy Evaline McGee, Sarah Davis Miller, Conrad Borden Davis, William Hedric Davis, among whom are justifiably several namesakes, and her 12 great grandchildren. In her difficult last days, Margaret was assisted by Cindy, Francis, Jan, Tanya, and Paula, to whom the family is very grateful. Providing a cheerful word, countenance, and conversation each day was her wonderful, longtime friend and neighbor, Nickie Oppermann. Please send memorials to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Hospice of Midland.Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 15, 2014 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Midland with Dr. Steve Schorr officiating.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory.
