Sammye Carol Laws was born July 17, 1918 to Samuel N. Laws and Margaret Jane Goode Laws in Texarkana, Texas. She went to be united with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on October 4, 2007. The family came to Stanton in 1936, Sammye graduated from Stanton High School in 1937. She was a faithful member of the Downtown Church of Christ. Sammye went to work for Texas Electric in 1942 and retired in July 1983 after 41 years of faithful service to the company. She was a 60 year Charter Member of Beta Sigma Phi, organized in Stanton in 1944, and was secretary of her chapter most of those 60 plus years. After retiring from TXU, she decided to fulfill her goals in life, beginning with enrolling in Howard College in 1986, with a 2 year degree in Speech. She then enrolled in UTPB, graduating with honors, where she earned a Bachalors degree in Mass Communications, May 7, 1988. She bought her first car and learned to drive, and bought a piano and took piano lessons after she was 50 years of age. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. The Rebekah Assembly #287, Martin County Hospital Auxiliary, The Stanton Music Club and american Cancer Society as well as Beta Sigma Phi. Sammye was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Floyd, C.B., Mosley and Ladd Laws; three sisters, Flossie (Trudy) Burnam, Johnnie Zimmerman, Sciotha Laws, (age 1 year) three nephews Jim, William and Bert Laws; three nieces Bitty Zimmerman Stockstill, Mary Frances Burnam and Margaret Laws Cummins. She is survived by two nephews, H.C. Burnam, Jr. and Harden Zimmerman, three nieces, Fayrene Tomlin, Sue Jane Brannum and Rita Ann Foster and several great-nephews and nieces. Also surviving are her care givers, Mamie and Louis Roten and special friends, Mamie Roten, Mary Prudie Brown, June Reid and Ruby Haggard, who were all Beta Sigma Phi sisters with Sammye for over 60 years. Sammye entered Stanton Care & Rehabilitation Center, January 2004 where she has resided until her death. Funeral services will be at Downtown Church of Christ in Stanton at 3 P.M.on Sunday, October 7, 2007 with Van Pendergrass minister officiating.
