I’m so proud of my brother Buck. Buck was always a sweet guy. As kids we would play endlessly with Buck being the big tease. While this may have gotten old at times I came to realize this was the way he was. He was just a fun loving guy wanting to have fun. I don’t think Buck ever met a person he didn’t like or who did not become a friend within minutes of meeting him. You would have to search long and hard to find a more outgoing person than Buck. But Buck had his own personal problems that followed him all his life. Early on he suffered from seizures that the medical community was never able to fully diagnose. Whether this led to his eventual problems with alcohol and cigarettes is difficult to say. Nevertheless, Buck kept going with perseverance and a positive outlook. As a young man Buck fathered two daughters, Tammy and Lori, with his first wife Linda. The problems Buck faced were more than he could handle and the family soon went their separate ways. He felt this was better than burdening them with his problems. Buck then met Betty McNulty who would become the love of his life. After marrying Betty, only a few years passed before the alcohol and the problems it caused resulted in Buck and Betty divorcing. Each went their separate way and eventually married other spouses. Buck’s life remained troubled for many years thereafter because of the alcohol and continuing seizures. In spite of these problems he continued to love his mother Dorothy dearly and took great care of her through her later years until her passing at age 79. Buck eventually dealt with his alcohol problem successfully. Through Alcoholics Anonymous he was able to escape his dependence and live the last 22 years of his life alcohol free. Shaking this demon proved to be invaluable to Buck and enabled him to live a much happier life thereafter. Ever the social person, Buck worked with others at AA helping them to overcome their dependence and remain sober. Betty meanwhile enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Luke, her husband of 31 years. After his passing Buck and Betty met again through mutual friends. Seeing that Buck was no longer drinking she realized the problem that had caused their initial breakup had been resolved. Eventually they remarried and spent the last eight years together in Midland, Texas. Buck and Betty bought a house together and with Betty’s decorating talents lived in what Buck called his dream house. Buck often said these were the best years of his life. Betty was even instrumental in getting Buck off cigarettes by slapping a patch on him one time when he was in the hospital. Buck often felt that he didn’t accomplish many things in his life. However, he was a top salesman in the meat business, helped numerous people through AA, and contributed many hours of community service through the Midland Lions Club. Add to that the smiles he brought to the faces of everyone he met and you would have to say he accomplished more than most. Not many people who met Buck would ever forget him. What better legacy could any man ask? Yes, dear brother, you did accomplish much. Looking back we realize what you had to overcome your entire life. I know you have been welcomed in heaven with open arms. After all, you never met a stranger.
