Roland Tony Moreland passed into the arms of his Lord Jesus Christ, surrounded by family, on May 6, 2023. He was 72.
Roland was born in Midland, Texas in 1951. He was the eldest son of Clark and Betty Moreland. After graduating from Midland High School, Roland attended Tarleton State University, and later Sul Ross University. Aside from living in Stephenville, Texas for four years, Roland lived his entire life in Midland. He loved the town of his birth and wouldn’t have wanted to live anywhere else, sandstorms and all.
In 1987, Roland met Nancy Hughes. By the end of their first date, Roland knew that this beautiful lady would be his wife. They were married the following September in a backyard ceremony. Roland and Nancy were married for 36 years and were inseparable. Roland loved her with his whole heart and will be waiting for her in Heaven.
Roland was passionate about teaching. His career spanned 34 years in three west Texas school districts – Midland, Stanton, and Greenwood. His mission in education was to instill a love of reading in his students. He never missed an opportunity to lead by example.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. A memorial service will take place 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 12, 2023, at the First Baptist Church Chapel.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Midland Soup Kitchen, care of Jason and Nancy Ivy, or to Midland Meals on Wheels.

coach moreland was my teacher 6th grade at Fannin elementary, on a windy day the building door slammened and broke a students arm, i still remember him picking him up and taking him to the office for help, he was a great teacher and coach , my condolences .

He was my favorite teacher. <3 If instilling a love of reading was his primary goal of being an educator, it was certainly achieved here! I'm still finding buffalo nickels in random boxes because of him (it was how he rewarded our class for meeting reading goals). Truly he was a great man, and one of the most influential people on my early life. He allowed me and my classmates probably too much freedom, but he also believed in us, and let us reach for goals we thought we couldn't achieve. I know everyone in Stanton who had the privilege of having him as a teacher loved him. He will be deeply missed.

I’m sad on the passing of Coach Moreland. He was my 6th grade teacher in 1972. It was fun to share a name even with no relation. My husband remembers he made the boys run a lot; girls got to hang out in the butler building.
He remembered me even 50 years later! We had a few Midland encounters over the years. May you cherish your memories. God bless.

Over the years Roland and I shared a humorous saying as we lovingly described our humble existence on Washington campus. Our phrase was "on the yard", lol. Nancy, you have my deepest condolences. Heaven has gained a new angel, and I know that earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.
