On Thursday, May 27th, 2021, our Heavenly Father welcomed home our Beloved Dad Robert “Steve” Crowley.
Steve was born on June 15th, 1945 at Midland Memorial Hospital to John W. Crowley and Katie Bell Ledbetter Crowley. He was raised in Midland and graduated from Midland Senior High School. He then attended Sul Ross University in Alpine, TX, studying history and dabbling in rodeo. His time in Alpine was cut short when the lucrative draw of the Permian Basin oil field called him back to Midland. There, he met the love of his life, a young Kathy Pugh, in the historic M.L. Leddy western wear store. They were married June 8th, 1968 in the chapel of First Baptist Church Midland and would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this year. Together, they raised their two children, daughter Susan and son Brian in rural Midland, along with horses and pecans on their 4-acre homestead southwest of town.
Steve worked for Drilco for over 20 years, specializing in quality control for parts and accessories utilized in oil field production and mining. His time at Drilco allowed him to travel the world, providing services for related customers and subsidiaries in the United States, Europe and Africa. Steve then transitioned into law enforcement and served 19 years as a peace officer with the Midland Co. Sheriff’s Department, attaining the rank of Sargent.
Steve was always dedicated to his family. His loved ones, above all, were blessed with his gentle nature and willingness to serve. He had a talent for fixing things and had a true passion for woodworking. He could often be found in his workshop doing what he loved and perfecting his craft. His craftsmanship was seen in a variety of creations, including furniture and smaller works of art for his wife, kids, grandkids, extended family, neighbors and friends. These were often gifts for the upcoming holiday season, or just because he wanted to bring someone joy.
Steve is survived by his loving wife Kathy Crowley and children Susan and husband Rick Lawson of Monahans, TX and Brian Crowley and wife Kristin of Colleyville, TX. Grandchildren include Byron Scharf, Jackson Scharf, Shannon Lawson, Parker Crowley and Merritt Crowley. Others remaining to cherish his memory include his brother, John Wesley Crowley, Jr. (Bud) of Midland and family, sister-in-law Linda and husband Jim Chancellor of Eldorado, TX and family, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless life-long friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Katie Bell Crowley, his sister Johnnie Sue Armstrong, and his brother Charles Crowley.
Graveside services will be held at Resthaven Cemetery at 1 pm on June 5th, 2021.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
