Ray L. Dabney, 78, of Big Spring, died Saturday, May 18, 2013, in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rev. Mark Lindsey and Rev. Floyd Green, officiating.The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, May 20, 2013, at the funeral home.He was born September 18, 1934, in Big Spring, Texas and married Darlene Dabney June 20, 1959 in Big Spring, Texas.Ray graduated from Big Spring High School and attended Howard College. He played baseball for the Hawks and was inducted into the Howard College Baseball Hall of Fame. He worked for Cosden Oil and Chemical and Fina for 35 years, retiring in 1995. Ray enjoyed fishing, hunting and all sports, especially baseball.He was a member of First Baptist Church.Survivors include his wife, Darlene Dabney of Big Spring; a daughter, Melody Lee Dabney of Austin; a nephew, George W. Dabney III and wife, Becky of Santa Paula, California; two great-nieces, Lea Ray Dabney and Celene Jo Tranby of Ventura, California.He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Willie Mae Dabney; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Herk and Dempsy Agee; four brothers and two sisters.The family suggests memorials be made to Heritage Museum, 510 Scurry, Big Spring, Texas 79720 or to the Big Spring Humane Society, P. Ray was a friend from boyhood days, when I visited my grandparents at 710 Runnels, just half a block from Ray's house. He was just a few months older than I. We roamed the 'hood and, probably, caused our share of consternation.His dad and my granddad, a locomotive engineer for the T&P, were friends through their employment by the railroad.Rest in peace, Ray.
