Randall “Randy” Wayne Newsom

Randall Wayne “Randy” Newsom, 66, of Midland, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Randy was born on February 4, 1960, in Brownfield, Texas, to Gene Edward Newsom and Alma Faye Newsom. He grew up in Brownfield and attended Brownfield High School, where he played football and excelled as a pole vaulter. A gifted athlete, Randy set the Brownfield High School pole vault record with a jump of 14 feet, 6 inches—an accomplishment that remained a source of pride throughout his life and a record that still stands today.

After graduating from high school, Randy began what would become a long and successful career in the Texas oil and gas industry. He was never afraid of hard work and learned the oilfield from the ground up. Over the years, he operated well service rigs, drove hot oil trucks, worked as a lease operator and production foreman, and eventually used his decades of experience and knowledge to establish his own consulting business, R&S Newsom Consulting, Inc. He continued working in the industry until his retirement in May 2024.

It was through the oilfield that Randy met the woman who would become his wife and best friend, Susie Brown. Randy and Susie were married on June 29, 1985, and celebrated 41 years of marriage together. Through more than four decades side by side, they built a life and family that meant more to Randy than anything else. They raised three children, Brandon, Lane, and Lacey, and Randy’s love for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was immeasurable. He was an extremely hard worker, but everything he worked for was ultimately about taking care of the people he loved.

Anyone who knew Randy knew exactly where they stood with him. He was blunt, straightforward, and never had much trouble telling you what he thought. He might not have agreed with everyone, but he could tolerate the ones he needed to—and usually find something to laugh about along the way. Beneath that blunt exterior was a man with a tremendous heart who never seemed to meet a stranger. Somehow, people he had only just met had a way of becoming his friends.

Outside of work, some of Randy’s happiest times were spent outdoors. He loved bass fishing and greatly enjoyed his years with the Permian Bass Club, especially the fellowship, competition, and countless memories made with his fishing buddies. He also enjoyed golfing and quail hunting, but perhaps just as much as fishing itself, Randy loved telling a good fishing tale.

Randy was a natural jokester and storyteller. He had a gift for taking a story and turning it into something that could captivate a room and leave everyone laughing. Whether every detail of one of his fishing stories happened exactly the way he told it may occasionally have been open for debate, but that was part of what made hearing him tell it so much fun. And whenever a good fish managed to break his line, those around him already knew what was coming: “Well, it felt like a 10-pounder.” It was pure Randy—a fisherman, a storyteller, and a man who could always find a reason to laugh.

Above everything else, Randy was a family man. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was simply “Paw-Paw,” a name he wore with pride. His greatest legacy will not be measured by the years he spent in the oilfield, the fish he caught, the golf he played, or even the high school record he set so many years ago. It will be found in the family he loved, provided for, laughed with, taught, and helped build. His children and grandchildren knew how deeply they were loved, and the lessons he taught through his work ethic, loyalty, humor, and devotion to family will continue through the generations that follow him.

Randy was preceded in death by his father, Gene Edward Newsom.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 41 years, Susie Newsom; his mother, Alma Faye Newsom; his brother, Darrell Gene Newsom; his children, Brandon Newsom, Lane Newsom and fiancée Brandie Howard, and Lacey Salgado and husband Billy Salgado; his grandchildren, Yesenia Salgado, Aubrey Newsom, Makalynn Newsom, Clyde Newsom, Brantley Newsom, Addalynn Newsom, Blake Joiner and Jayton Pope; and his great-grandchildren, Esella Salgado, Zayden Salgado, and Zakius Salgado. He also leaves behind many extended family members, lifelong friends, fishing buddies, colleagues, and others whose lives were made a little better—and usually a little more entertaining—by knowing him.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Serenity Memorial Gardens.
