Quail Dobbs, 72, of Coahoma, died Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Trinity Baptist Church in Big Spring with Eddy Pitchford, Russ Mullins and Tumbleweed Smith, officiating . Interment will follow at Coahoma Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. He was born August 27, 1941 in Albany, Texas and married Judy McGuire , February 21, 1964 in Clovis, New Mexico. Dobbs began his career in rodeo by riding bulls and bareback horses, and in 1962 when a clown didn’t show up in Buffalo, Minnesota, he began his career as a rodeo clown. During his career he was named PRCA Clown of the Year twice in 1978 and 1988 and the Coors Man in the Can four times in 1985, 1986, 1990 and 1993. He is one of only three men to work as both a bullfighter and barrelman at the National Finals Rodeo, and has also worked seven times as a barrelman for the Wrangler Bullfight Tours Final. He has also worked 28 times at the Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming, and the 1998 Frontier Days marked Dobbs' last appearance in professional rodeo. He is a member of the West of the Pecos Rodeo Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2002. He was also inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2011 he was honored on the Ft. Worth Heritage Trail. He was inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City in 2013. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo Board of Directors, the Heritage Museum Board, the Howard/Glasscock County Old Settlers Reunion, an honorary member of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Heels, he was a Mason and a Shriner. He was also a member of the Coahoma Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Judy Dobbs of Coahoma; a son, Coley Dobbs and wife, Shawna of Coahoma; a daughter, Stephanie Rotan and husband, Wayne of Glen Rose; four grandchildren, Reagan Rotan, Keegan Dobbs, Shelby Rotan and Serena Dobbs; several nieces and nephews including Misty and David Uckert, Kimberly and Todd Stone, Cody and Racheal McGuire, Clay and Jari McGuire, Tammy Hubbard and Mike Dobbs; his mother-in-law, Johnnie Clay McGuire of Crane; and a brother-in-law, Bill McGuire and wife, Linda of Crane. He was preceded in death by his parents, Acie and Avis Dobbs; a brother, Leon Dobbs; and his father-in-law, Bob McGuire.
