Jon and Gina, My heart was broken when I received the call that Phyllis had passed so unexpectedly. Phyllis was an amazing mother, wife, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed on earth but we can find comfort knowing she is with Jesus. She has such an artistic gift which I'm sure she is using to decorate her room in heaven. “2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” (John 14:2-3).

Phyllis was the most ordinary extraordinary person I have ever known. She was an accomplished artist and my elementary school art teacher. A serious person that was quick with a self-effacing joke. A superior intellect without an air of superiority. A caring aunt with a biting wit. All of my memories of her are similar. She was this figure of immense talent and grace that I was somewhat in awe of her but she never made me feel small. A handful of times I would be at her house when my parents needed someone to watch me and those memories all have the same pleasant feeling in my mind. I can remember her comforting me during a hailstorm and her nodding gravely when I said that it was a “hell storm but the weather kind of hell, not the other kind of hell”. I can remember her agreeing that I was very good at playing the piano while I banged away discordantly. I remember her giving me a lump of clay to play with while she worked on some ceramic piece. I can remember John and Phyllis fighting with Gina over who knows what and it ending with Gina storming away from the table. Aunt Phillis turned to me and said, “we don’t need to talk about this at school tomorrow“ and giving me that one eyebrow up and one eyebrow down look that was at once a question mark and a period. She might as well have said, “Capiche!?” I can still hear that short little snort laugh she made when she found something amusing. And see the nostril flare and lip twitch that has been passed down and refined in our family. I always felt that it would be quite difficult to impress her but that I never needed to. I’m sure she would have spotted five grammatical errors in this but wouldn’t point them out. I will miss her, remember her, and snort at something funny in her honor.
