Pearlie B. Johnson was born December 26, 1925, in Falls County, Texas, to the late Isaac and Gertrude Woods. She grew up in Kosse, Texas, and attended school in Long Branch Public Schools. She was the fifth child of seven siblings. She loved her family and had respect for her parents. On December 13, 1944, she was united in holy matrimony to Ontee Johnson, Sr., wherein they had three children, Mary Johnson-Warren, Wanda Johnson-Butler and the late Ontee Johnson, Jr.
Mother Johnson accepted Christ as a young woman and served Him faithfully. She enjoyed singing, music, playing the piano, teaching, mentoring, gardening, traveling, cooking, and spending time with her family. She would always tell her family, “Keep God’s word close to your heart and believe it.” Before she departed this life, she specified, “My mind is in perfect peace, I have Jesus in my life, and that is ALL I need.”
Mother Pearlie B. Johnson was a member of Alexander Temple COGIC under the late Bishop J. E. Alexander until he moved to Lubbock, Texas, then afterward Superintendent WC Kenan was appointed Pastor. Mother Pearlie B. Johnson remained a loyal, faithful, and dedicated member under Pastor WC Kenan and the late Missionary Bertha Kenan at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ until her health began to fail. She served in many capacities, including the Mothers Board, Missionary, Sunday School Teacher, and also a teacher at Faith Temple Daycare Center. She was a member of the Voices Senior Choir, mission worker, Usher, and loyal supporter of the annual Spiritual Explosion. Mother Johnson traveled to local, state, and national meetings of the Church of God in Christ. During her early years, she traveled International Congregation, Holy Convocation, Youth Congress, UNAC, and AIM, she was also a convention choir member under Mattie Moss Clark.
Called by many names, Mother, Grandmomma, Aunt Ike, Aunt Pearlie B, Mother Johnson departed this life at 10:40 a.m., May 10, 2022, and moved on from this earthly walk and united with her parents Gertrude and Isaac, siblings Eldridge Woods, Eddie Woods, Mary Weatherspoon, Darnell Wallace, and Charlie Smith. Also, grandson Ellis ‘Dumpling” Warren III, whom all preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters: Mary Warren (Ellis) of Midland, Texas, and Wanda Butler of Austin, Texas; one sister, Clairreaser Coleman-Watts of Pasadena, Maryland; and one sister-in-law, Wilse Mae Robinson of Little Rock, Arkansas. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Derrick Warren of Austin, Texas, Monica Warren-Jennings (Isaac) of Midland, Texas, Rodney Warren (Toccora) of Midland, Texas, England “Candy” Carter of Houston, Texas, Scotland Butler of Austin, Texas, Italy Butler (Fabian) of Midland, Texas and Judy Johnson-Warren of Midland, Texas, and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family, and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, with burial following at Resthaven Memorial Park.
