Oma “Dutchie” Johnson passed away August 7, 2015 into the arms of her Savior with her family by her side. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, August 10, 2015 at the Evergreen Cemetery Chapel in Stanton. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Gilbreath Funeral Home in Stanton. Dutchie was born January 18, 1922 in Collin County, Texas to N.G. and Lillian Haggard. She attended schools in Loyola, now Flower Grove, Lenorah and Stanton. She married David “Dee” Saunders September 26, 1940. To this marriage two daughters, Linda and Sarah, were born. Dee passed away February 16, 1953. She married Albert Johnson August 11, 1961. She moved to Martin County in the 1920’s settling on a farm in north Martin County, across the road from the Slaughter Ranch Headquarters, where she witnessed the last cattle drive to the pens in Stanton. After Dee passed away she went to work for the post office. In 1957 she was appointed carrier for Route 1, retiring in 1985. On this job she drove 113 miles 6 days a week making about 165 stops. She quickly became very good at changing flats, usually carrying three to four spare tires and often coming back to town to get them repaired so that she could finish her route. Drivers driving Martin County roads now think the roads are bad, they should have been around in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Sand dunes were 3-4 feet high, mile long mud holes and tumbleweeds stacked to the roof. Thanks to Alsup’s, Blocker’s, Franklin’s and Wheeler’s for keeping her vehicles up and running. She is survived by her husband, Albert of Stanton, two daughters, Linda Petree of Comfort, and Sarah Graves and husband, Bobby Hogue of Voss; grandchildren, Corey Petree and wife, Kirsten and their daughter, Ella of Washington, D.C., Todd Petree and wife, Cindy and their children, Carrie and Jude Clay of Indianapolis, Indiana and Ashley Reimer and husband, Tim and their children, Ethan Ducote and Dawson of Abilene and a host of nephews, nieces and countless friends. She was also preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, James, Jerry, Rob, Tommy Alex and Buster and 4 sisters, Elizabeth, Willie May, Helene and Jean. The family suggests that memorials be made to Martin County Senior Citizens, P.O. Box 1233, Stanton, Texas 79782, Martin County Historical Museum, P.O.
