Norman R. KlancherNorman R. Klancher, known as "Clancy" to his friends, passed away Thursday morning, January 17, 2008 at the Mabee Healthcare Unit of Manor Park in Midland, Texas. He was 82, a disabled Army veteran and a former resident of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his brother, Laddie F. Klancher, of El Paso, Texas who died February 17, 2007. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, his father, Joseph Klancher and mother, Agnes Klancher, all of Warren, Ohio. Clancy was born on a farm outside of Warren, Ohio to an Austrian immigrant family. He had over 27 years combined service in the U. S. Navy and U. S. Army. While in the Navy, he was assigned to the USS Preserver while it was stationed near Bikini Island during Operations Crossroads in 1946. During his U. S. Army career, he served in Germany during World War II, served in the Korean and Viet Nam Conflicts and was stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia until his retirement in 1972. He resided in Columbus until 2007 when he moved to Midland, Texas to be near family. Clancy is survived by his niece, Diane Klancher, husband, Randy Hicklin and children, Laura and Kara of Midland, Texas and Amy Max of Oklahoma City; nephew, Michael Klancher, wife, Sheri, and their daughter, Madison, son Stephen and stepson, Justin, of Brea, California. The family wishes to thank the staff of Covenant Woods in Columbus, the Mabee Unit and Home Hospice of Midland, Texas. Graveside services for Mr. Klancher will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2008 at the Main Post Cemetery in Ft. Benning, Georgia. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.
