Norma Elaine Hicks passed away on April 30, 2022 after a lengthy illness. Elaine was born on January 4, 1942 to Carroll C. Jones and Alice B. Howell on a farm near Olton, Texas. She attended school in Olton and graduated from Olton High School in May of 1960.
On May 28, 1960, she married Johnny C. Hicks of Plainview, Texas. Elaine and Johnny began their life together in Pampa, Texas. While in Pampa, their three children were born; Sherry, Donnie and Scott. The family moved to Snyder, Texas and Portland, Texas before making Midland, Texas their permanent home in 1974.
Elaine quickly made many new friends and became involved in many activities. Elaine was especially interested in church activities at Saint Nicholas Episcopal and Christ Church Anglican. She volunteered at Meals on Wheels, The American Cancer Society and The American Heart Association. Elaine spent a lot of her free time reading and crocheting. She created hundreds of afghans, coasters and bookmarks for family and friends. Elaine enjoyed playing board games and card games; she was extremely competitive and “played to win”. In their retirement years, she and Johnny became members of Ranchland Hills Country Club and enjoyed playing golf as often as possible.
What brought them the greatest joy was attending their children’s and grandchildren’s school and sporting events. They were faithful Lee Rebel Football fans who rarely missed a game for more than 30 years. Elaine was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Johnny C. Hicks; parents, Carroll C. Jones and Alice B. Howell; son-in-law, Steve Culpepper; brother-in-law, Newlon Rowland.
She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Rowland of Hart, Texas; sister-in-law, Randy Prentice and husband Don of Marlin, Texas; daughter, Sherry Culpepper of Midland; sons, Donnie Hicks and wife Patricia of Lubbock, Scott Hicks and wife Kim of Midland; grandchildren, Charissa Barbour and husband Mike, Cassie Culpepper, Steven Culpepper, Cynthia Culpepper, David Hicks, Katie Hicks, Kade Hicks, Hayden Hicks, Emalea Hicks, Brandon Phillips, and Morgan Phillips; great grandchildren, Lilith Barbour, Audrey Culpepper; and numerous nieces and nephews.
