Nelda Fern Smith Highsaw Cox
September 21, 1930 – April 7, 2025
Nelda Fern Smith Highsaw Cox passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on the “Old” Sneed Ranch in Kent County near Jayton, Texas, Nelda grew up in Rotan, Texas, where she graduated from Rotan High School in 1947. During her high school years, she was a bright presence on stage, performing in the senior play A Little Honey by William Davidson.
Nelda’s life was deeply rooted in family, community, and service. She made Midland, Texas her home for over seventy years, where she built a meaningful life filled with work, volunteerism, and friendship. She spent many years employed in the oil and gas industry and, following retirement, found joy and purpose in giving back to her community. Nelda volunteered her time to the Head Start program, nurturing and supporting children, as well as to a women’s healthcare organization — two causes close to her heart.
Though private about her political views, Nelda was a dedicated and active member of her local political community. She was well known among party members for her commitment, warmth, and integrity.
Nelda was preceded in death by many beloved family members: her father Gaines Britton Smith, her mother Leola Estella “Stella” Wynn, her brother Loyd Dean Smith, her sister Betty Alice Tankersley, her first husband William Jackson “Cotton” Highsaw, her second husband William Gordon “Bill” Cox, and her cherished daughters Beverly McCaskill, Vicky Beth Azar, and Brenda Sue Miller.
She is survived by her brother Foye Wayne Smith, wife Tina and family, stepdaughter Jody Cox, and her loving grandchildren: John McCaskill and wife Shelli, Janet Sanders and husband Chris, Greg McCaskill and wife Laila, Amy Azar, and James Azar. Nelda also leaves behind her great-grandchildren: Joey Sanders, Natalie Sanders, Johnny McCaskill, and Simone McCaskill — each a source of great pride and joy.
Known for her ever-present smile and kindhearted nature, Nelda never met a stranger. She had a remarkable ability to make others feel seen and special, whether in person or over the phone — which rang constantly with calls from friends and loved ones. She was a steady presence in many lives, always offering warmth, laughter, and thoughtful conversation.
Nelda’s legacy is one of strength, generosity, and enduring love. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
