Minna L. Currie, 84, of Midland, died on Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Hospice Midland Inpatient Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, June 27, 2004 at New Life Presbyterian Church, 2900 Princeton, with the Reverend Michael Philliber, officiating. A memorial service in Montgomery, Alabama will be held at a later date. Minna donated her body to Texas Tech University Medical School in Lubbock, TX. Minna was born on May 2, 1920, in Framingham, Massachusetts to Hugo Carl Sydow and Minna (Sippach) Sydow. She married Roswell Ernest Currie in May 1947 . Educated in Framingham and at Simmons College in Boston, Minna was a registered nurse. She did rural public health nursing before joining the Army Nurse Corps. Serving three years during WWII, with her unit following the D-Day invasion into Normandy, Belgium, and Germany, she attained the rank of 1st Lt., and was awarded the WWII Victory medal and the Bronze Star. The picture above was taken at the end of the war, when her fiance' flew her in his P-51 reconnaissance plane over France, Switzerland, and her mother's home village (Klingenthal) in East Germany, her first plane ride.After her marriage, she moved to the South. Minna resumed her nursing career in the 1960s at Professional Center Hospital in Montgomery, AL, and retired from John Knox Manor Nursing Home in 1983. She never retired from helping others, and even in her last days at Rockwood Manor Nursing Home, spent time at the nurses' station "helping" them with their paperwork.Minna modeled thrift, hard work and loyalty, but most of all a steadfast faith in the Lord through good and hard times. A member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Montgomery since 1954, she got much joy from attending New Life Presbyterian Church (PCA) after moving to Midland in 2002. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Ellen (Muff) Fregia of Midland, a son, Dr. David Paul Currie and wife Molly of Sylacauga, Alabama; five grandsons: James A. Fregia, II and wife Merie of Los Angeles, California; Capt. Justin A. Fregia of Colorado Springs, Colorado; PV2 Joel A. Fregia of Monterey, California; D. Paul Currie, Jr. and wife Jacqueline; Philip A. Currie ; great granddaughter, Sarah Margaret Currie all of Birmingham, Alabama; two brothers, Carl A. Sydow of Framingham, Massachusetts, and George R. Sydow and wife Barbara of Vero Beach, Florida; sister-in-law, Shirley Sydow of Alton Bay, New Hamphshire; and sister-in-law, Eunice Nelson of , Montana. Minna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lt. Col. (ret) Roswell Ernest Currie, and a brother, Dr. Paul F.
