Mike was my first friend, he took me to school on the first day in the first grade and introduced me to his teachers he was a year ahead of me in school. I always loved being around him, it broke my heart when he moved to Big Spring. Years later we worked together in Forsan, Big Spring and Snyder. He was one of a kind. He was always talking to me about Uncle Son Newby and Teddy Smedley and the great times we had going to birthday parties and church together. I remember going to the Primitive Baptist church with him and playing outside. He could play anything with strings on it. He was a great friend that will certainly be missed.

To Mike's family - I worked with Mike and have known him for 33 years. We always had a good time together fishing, rabbit hunting and deer hunting. We talked about hard times and good times. He knew I was always there for him, as I knew he was always there for me. Kelsey, he always talked about you and wanted to make sure you were taken care of. He was an exceptional guitar player, was very kind and caring, and a very close friend. I will miss him dearly.
Shonda Sparks left a message on October 18, 2012:
My prayers go out to all of Mike's family for this sad loss. But most specifically, I want to send my love and support to my sister Kelcey, who when Mike became ill was there to support and take care of him. She moved him closer to her to be able to do that in Brady. When the time had come, she took him into her home and cared for him day and night while raising her 3 children. Luckily I and my two children were able to spend some time with Mike before he passed and I know how gratefull he was for her. Sister- Your strength and compassion through all of this is undeniable. And it is that strength that will continue to pull you through. May God wrap you in his loving arms tomorrow and the days to follow while you heal from your loss.Take joy in knowing that Mike is at peace and no longer suffering.I imagine he is tuning his guitar right now!I love you.

Cheryl and Virginia,I can't tell you how much this saddened me to hear. I know how hard it is to lose a sibling. Mike was always so kind to my parents when they were living on State St. I'm sorry I can't be there to celebrate his life with you, but you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Michael saved my life in 1969. My friend, Randall Pope, and I were involved in a motorcycle accident on October 25, 1969. He was killed and I wound up in the hospital for a month. Michael befriended me during our senior year at BSHS. His companionship held me together during the couple of years following the accident. He was gregarious, funny and entertaining. After a year at HCJC, I chased a girl to Georgia, and she caught me. We married in 1972. We just recently celebrated our fortieth anniversary, surrounded by our two sons, their wives and five grandchildren. On several visits (including a couple of class reunions) in the 70’s and 80's, I contacted Michael. I was not successful in getting him to join the festivities, but did visit him in his home. Pretty soon, our visits were limited to once or twice a year and dedicated to time with family. I wish I had tried harder to be his friend. He deserved better. Our prayers are with you all as you say goodbye.David and Lee Morton13550 Saint John RoadPilot Point, TX 76258

To all the family of my good friend Michael,My deepest sympathies during this time. Mike was a good friend to me. We played music together, wrote and recorded songs, drank a lot of beer, then a lot of coffee , had long deep discussions about life, love, and music and I always looked forward to spending time with him. I loved his quirky sense of humor, the way he played the guitar, and his love of his family, and his West Texas roots. I only wish I could have spent more time with him. I will miss him and will try to locate our old tape recordings.Cary C Banks Lubbock Texas
