Michael Ray Murphy, 77, lifetime resident of Howard County passed away Friday, June 26, 2026 at his residence. Viewing will be from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm, Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. The family visitation will begin at 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, July 2, 2026 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Michael was born March 20, 1949 in Big Spring, Texas to parents Marvin Franklin Murphy and Helen Vonsell Britton Murphy. He retired from Big Spring Independent School District after 30 years as Director of Maintenance. Michael built his own home and was an exceptional carpenter. He loved fishing, especially bass. He enjoyed gardening and you would never see him sitting down as he was always on the go. He was known for his cooking, especially chicken and dumplings! He was a faithful member of 14th & Main Church of Christ.
Michael is survived by his daughter Dana Walker, son-in-law Dennis Witt, grandchildren Cody Attebury, Braden Witt (Brandy); his great great grandchildren Kayden, Karlea, and Kamdon, and his honorary great-grandchildren Ava, Emmeline, Jeremiah, Piper Jo and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Judy “The Love and Joy of his Life” Murphy, and his siblings Peggy McCarty and Marva Daniels.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Taylor Fields and ExCela (formerly Interim Hospice) for their gentle care and Dr. Paul Walter’s care for 42 years (his cardiologist in Lubbock). Also a special thanks for Dennis Witt for the care and love he provided.
