Mary Evelyn Holmes, 96, of Columbia, Missouri, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, died Sunday, September 3, 2006 at South Hampton Place, her residence since November 2001.Evelyn was born September 3, 1910 in Yoakum, Texas, to Charles Allen and Sylvia Daisy Peterson. She married Darius Justin Holmes, June 3, 1933 and moved to Big Spring in 1938. A stay-at-home Mom to two sons, Justin Allen and David Lewis, she was active in her children's school activities such as PTA, and Cub Scouts, and assisted as a classroom volunteer. For many years she volunteered at Big Spring State Hospital and Big Spring Veterans Hospital, and as a "pink lady" at Malone and Hogan/Scenic Mountain Hospital. Evelyn was also active in the First Christian Church, helping to prepare the church newsletter, participating in Christian Women's Fellowship, and several other church related activities.Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years; her son Colonel Justin Allen Holmes; two sisters and one brother. Her survivors include son David and wife Lysa, of Columbia, Missouri; grandchildren Glenda Jo Empsall and her husband John of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; David Justin Holmes and his wife, Grace of Austin, Texas; Drew Nolen Holmes, and Callie Elizabeth Holmes of Columbia, Missouri; daughter-in-law Claudia Holmes of Irvington, Virginia; and great-grandsons Nathan Empsall and Christopher Empsall of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and Miles David Holmes of Austin, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and friends.Services will be held in Big Spring, Texas on September 13, 2006, at the First Christian Church, with burial in Trinity Memorial Park. The late Justin Holmes' brother, Rev. Doyle Holmes of Lubbock will officiate, assisted by Rev. Ken McIntosh, pastor of First Christian Church.
