Marjorie Schaafsma, 77, of Midland, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2008, in Midland. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, August 11, 2008 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Midland with Rev. Sherry Holloman, officiating.Marjorie was born September 28, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa to Leona Pearl and Gerald Vonk. She grew up and was educated in Iowa. For many years she worked as a chief buyer for Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Chicago. Marjorie and Clifford were married on April 1, 1952 and shared 50 wonderful years together. In 1973 they moved to Midland, where Clifford worked as a landman in the petroleum industry. Marjorie was deeply involved with the Trinity Presbyterian Church volunteering over the years for many projects. She was also involved in charity work including. CASA, St. Andrews Presbyterian Mission and The Community Children's Clinic. Christmas won't be the same for these children without Marjorie's delicious cookies.Survivors include brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Peggy Vonk of Tucson, Arizona; sister, Jean Vonk Dellaca of Downey, California; brother, Thomas Vonk of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother, Roger Vonk of Los Angeles, California; sister, Sandra Vonk Cazares of Southgate, California; Anna Beth Shaafsma Magee, sister-in-law, and cousin, Barbara O'Brien of Midland.In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the charity of your choice.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. We wish so send our deepest sympathies and condolences to Marj's family. We have so many fond memories of her friendship and generosity from when we lived in Midland! She was so helpful volunteering her time, energy, and talents for St. Andrew's Presbyterian Mission on a regular basis. As the former director of the Mission, I knew we could always depend on her to help. She also took the time to help our family with our young daughters whenever we needed her, such as when I had to travel overseas and my husband needed help with the girls. She personally made a costume and helped dress my young daughter for a school program. These are just some of the many wonderful memories that we have of Marj Schaafsma.
