Madeline Atkins left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior on January 18, 2009 at the age of 99 years and 5 months. She was born August 18, 1909 in Sherman, Texas to Homer and Mildred Kyle. At an early age she moved to Canyon, Texas and attended West Texas Teachers College. While attending college she met and married Jasper W. Atkins on April 5, 1930. He died in 1989 just months short of them being married 70 years. Madeline and her husband moved to Big Spring in 1949 and purchased Big Spring Hardware. They later established Big Spring Furniture. After her husband's death, she continued to run Big Spring Furniture as her art gallery and sold antiques and collectibles from that location until closing it when she was 93 years old.She was a member of First Christian Church in Big Spring and taught Sunday School for a number of years. She was an avid golfer, fisherman, and bridge player. She played golf and bridge into her late 80's and took her last fishing trip to the coast when she was 94.She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Donna Atkins of Big Spring; one daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Asa Jenkins of Anadarko, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Randy Jenkins and wife, Pat of Chickasha, Oklahoma, Larry Jenkins and wife, Marilyn of Enid, Oklahoma, Travis Jenkins of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Carrie Currie and husband, Henry of Austin, Hays Atkins and wife, Jessica of Wimberley, Eric Atkins and wife, Maday of Leander and Tina Brunson of Leander plus two adopted grandchildren, Bill Carey of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Kendra Willingham and husband, Bob of Frisco; 15 great grandchildren, and seven great great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one grandson, Craig Atkins.Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 23, 2009, at the Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel with Rev. Ken McIntosh, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating.The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, at the funeral home.The family would like to thank the staff of Parkview Nursing Home and Home Hospice for the loving care they gave mother.
