Lydia Augusta Dupree Richey, age 94, died on October 11, 2003, at her home in Midland. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 10:00 A.M., at the Chapel at Manor Park, with Rev. Bob Hopkins, Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church, offficiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 P.M., Tuesday, at Denver City Memorial Park in Denver City. Mrs. Richey will lie in state at the funeral home until 9 am Tuesday morning. She was born February 11, 1909 in Rising Star, Texas to Rev. Ed Anderson and Virginia Ann Cooper Anderson. She attended public school in Rising Star, Cross Cut, May and Bronte. She joined the Methodist Church when she was seven years old and continued to be an active member all her life. She graduated Salutorian from Bronte High School in 1926 and attended McMurray College. In college she was president of the Student Self Government Organization and belonged to Alpha Theta Mu. After three years and a summer she graduated from college.She started her teaching career in Pioneer, Texas in the fall of 1929. While teaching there, she met and married Burton Jacob Dupree. They were blessed with two children, Burton and Karen.In 1939, Jake was transferred to Denver City, Texas with Texas Pacific Coal and Oil Company. In 1942 she began her teaching career again in Denver City where she was very active in the Methodist Church and in civic affairs. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and represented Denver City at several state and national conventions. She also belonged to Eastern Star. In 1973 she lost her husband Jake. After 32 years of teaching, she retired in 1974 and began traveling. She traveled to several countries including Canada, Panama, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Hawaii, Israel, Venezula, Switerland, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Syria, Jordan, Holland, Belgium, Carribean Islands, Luxenburg, Liechenstein, and Greece.In 1977, she moved to Lubbock where she met and married Dr. Granville Richey, a retired Army Lt. Colonel. They lived in McAllen, Texas and Ruiodoso, New Mexico, and later bought a home in Manor Park a retirement community in Midland. Granville passed away December 21, 1991.She is survived by a son Burton Dupree from Menlo Park, California and daughter Karen Westbrook in Midland, seven grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to Manor Park, 2208 N.
