Lucy Ann Walker Stagg, 87, of Midland, Texas, passed away just after midnight January 14th, 2025. A visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7 pm on Friday, January 24th at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory. Funeral Services will be at 3:30 pm Saturday, January 25th at Crestview Baptist Church of Midland.
Lucy was born in Covington County, Mississippi to Ernest Edward and Ada Rogers Walker. Growing up in Mississippi with her brother Edward and her sister Leola, she shared many funny stories of picking cotton, Edward leaving her at the railroad tracks while walking to school, and she and her sister Leola’s mutual love of dancing! Lucy accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was baptized in Mississippi and never stopped telling others of His love and mercy. She lived her life in the shadow of His grace and did her very best to reflect Him in all she did.
Lucy’s gift of patience and empathy lead her to a career in nursing. She began nursing school from USM of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and graduated from Gilfoy School of Nursing at Baptist Hospital in Jackson Mississippi, but not before setting her nursing school friend, Carolyn Bynum, up with her brother, Edward, so they could become sisters in law. Lucy went on to marry Hugh White Saxton in September of 1959, and three children, Cheryl Ann, Hugh Scott, and Christopher Edward were born of their union.
Lucy was a skilled and detail-oriented seamstress, showing off her talents and often making her children’s and granchildren’s clothing, including a pretty jazzy set of matching Easter leisure suits for Hugh and the boys. The Saxton’s traveled all across the United States and into Central America following Hugh’s job in the oil field as a doodlebugger. The family trailed the dynamite lighter, all while Lucy pulled the kids along without so much as a cell phone or GPS system. Lucy and Hugh put down roots in Midland, Texas in 1975.
Lucy married Dr. John Gillett in 1991. The couple worked together at Midland Memorial Hospital in the Emergency Room. Together, they enjoyed hosting in their home, flying in John’s plane and having kids and grandkids swim in the pool. After being widowed, Lucy married Thomas R. Stagg in 1994.
In 2003, Lucy was widowed once again, and focused all of her attention on her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lucy spent her days sewing, crafting, gardening, and fostering animals but enjoyed most of all hosting typical Southern traditions like Sunday Dinners at Mawmaw’s, birthday parties and baby showers. Lucy enjoyed gardening and had quite the green thumb. She loved flowers and incorporated her favorite yellow roses and other flowers into everything. She enjoyed letting the grandkids play in the water and make messes with crafting supplies and good old mud, while sitting on her beautifully green, and blooming patio.
In 2013, Lucy discovered family in Honduras. To her pleasant surprise, she had two sisters, Marla Walker and Ernestina Walker, along with multiple nieces and nephews. Lucy was blessed to host a visit with her dear sister, Marla, in 2015 where language held no barrier in a quickly established sisterly bond.
Lucy was the embodiment of love and Southern Grace and became like a surrogate mom or grandmother to so many friends of her family. Lucy is so fondly remembered by many of the hairdressing community (her granddaughter, Tara, is a hairdresser) as well as her friends at Crestview Baptist and Polo Park Retirement Village. Lucy never met a stranger and was likely to compliment you on anything pretty and sparkly. Lucy was also never one to skimp on the glamour, as she was quick to remind her daughter and granddaughters to put on some lipstick so they didn’t scare people. Lucy was her happiest when she was dancing or spending time with her cherished family of 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She recently traveled to Oklahoma this summer to see her Grandson Caleb get married and tore up the dance the floor all night long! We know she is in heaven dancing with anyone she can snatch up.
