Lorraine James Miles, 99, passed away on December 17, 2024 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Midland, Texas after a long and happy life.
Lorraine was born on September 29, 1925 in Kirksey, Kentucky to the late Aubrey and Daisy James. She graduated from Kirksey High School as Valedictorian and attended Murray State University. She met a handsome young G.I. who had returned from the war named Joe Miles and married him on June 9, 1946. After moving around the country for several years for work, they moved to Midland, Texas in 1958 where they remained and raised their daughter and son.
In the 1960’s she began working for the Midland County Juvenile Probation Office as secretary to the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer and after 13 years became the first female Chief Juvenile Probation Officer in the State of Texas. She then served as Chief for 10 years before retiring. She was active in her community. She served as President of the Texas Zeta Mu Chapter of Phi Sigma Alpha from 1976-1977. She loved and supported St. Mark’s United Methodist Church since 1959.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joe, who died on March 12, 2002; her brothers Cordis James of Kirksey, Kentucky and Joe Pat James of Murray, Kentucky and her sister Aliese Paschall of Sullivan, Illinois.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Covington of College Station, Texas, and her son, Kevin Miles and his wife Diane of Midland, Texas; grandchildren, Alicia Rickner, Christopher Miles, Sean Covington and Steven Miles; great-grandchildren, Aiden Covington and Hunter Miles; nieces Cheryl Jominy, Joyce Paschall and nephew Ross James; four great-nieces and one great-nephew. She was delighted to hold her great-great-grandson Walker Miles, who was born on her 99th birthday.
The funeral service will be held Monday, December 23, 2024, 10:00am at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Midland. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Miles, Sean Covington, Steven Miles and Hunter Miles.
