On February 27, 1930, she was born on the family farm in the little community of Corinth in Jones County, Texas, to JT and Annice (Jones) Mims. She always spoke fondly of her adventures with older brother, Lawrence, and her younger brother, Billy Loyd.
She met Billy Ray Avery when they were 15 years old and shortly after graduation from Stanton High School at 17, they were married. They spent 41 wonderful years together. Lorece was an active, lifelong member of the Downtown Church or Christ in Stanton, Texas. She was a gracious person, who enjoyed taking care of and cooking for, family, friends, and neighbors. Anyone who knew her cooking will dearly miss her peanut patties. She loved sewing, gardening, being with her family, and sending greeting cards for any occasion to everyone she knew. Lorece and Billy Ray loved to travel across the US, especially the western states. Their yearly family fishing trip was always a highlight for her.
Lorece is survived by her daughters, Cindy Brown (Gary) and Rae Smith (Jeff); grandchildren, Chris Carder (fiancée, Lori Webb-Wentz), Misti Potter (Alan), Michael Brown (Kristin), Allison Gibbons-Brown (Michael), Avery Smith (Shelby), Robert Brown (Mykeli), and Steven Smith (Morie); 15 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara Lowrance; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ray Avery; daughter, Scherry Avery Carder (Doug); brothers, Lawrence Lowrance (Laura) and Billy Lloyd Mims (Kay).
The family wishes to convey a heartfelt “Thank You” to everyone at Lyndale Abilene Senior Living, Lyndale Abilene Memory Care, and Kinder Hearts Hospice for the many kindnesses and compassionate care they provided Lorece.
