Linda Sue Callaway, 75, of Midland passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. A Celebration of Life will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024 at the Grassland Clubhouse, 5800 Crowley Blvd., Midland, Texas.
There will also be a Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Eickenhorst Funeral Services, 12412 FM 2854 Rd., Conroe, Texas.
Linda was born on February 19, 1949 in Glenmora, Louisiana to Calvin Evans and Joy Hudgens. She grew up in Texas City and was the oldest of three children. Linda grew up with a love of reading, theater, and flashy red sports cars. She enjoyed a typical active and happy life until the loss of her father at the age of 20, and the ensuing hardships experienced by the family. Linda also experienced personal hardships over the next few years, going through two failed marriages while working to support her son Sam and herself. She learned resilience through these times and no doubt her traits of kindness, humility, and the value of humor grew during these years.
Linda met Michael Callaway in the spring of 1977. They enjoyed a loving relationship and happy marriage till Linda left us on April 2, 2024. Linda was smart and insightful, though she was only able to complete a high school education and a bit of college. She loved and cherished family and friends and was incredible with always taking the time to send a note or card or make a phone call or send a text. Linda also loved to share a good meal, and perhaps an adult beverage, with friends or family. She liked to eat, but it was also about the company. Linda also enjoyed collecting, travel, nature, and animals, especially her pets over the years (a raccoon, several dogs and numerous cats).
Linda is survived by her mother Joy Warren, aunt Doris Carlisle, uncle Tommy Hudgens, cousins Sandra Carlisle and Will Hudgens, niece Miranda Smrekar, nephew Jeffrey Evans, and grand niece Laney Smrekar. Linda is also survived by her husband Michael Callaway, stepmother Maxine Callaway, brother-in-law Billy Callaway, sister-in-law Lisa Callaway, step niece Sarina Ramos, and step nephews Jason Craven, Shelton Hand, and Dylan Callaway. She is also survived by numerous friends, distant relatives, and in-laws, which she cherished almost as much as family.
Linda is preceded in death by her father Calvin Evans, son Samuel Johnston, father-in-law Bill Callaway, niece Christina Evans Disler, brother Michael Evans, sister Wanda Leggett, and numerous other aunts, uncles, grandparents, in laws, and friends.
Linda loved nature, and particularly flowers, but mostly flowers that were outdoors and still on plants. In lieu of flowers, Linda requested that those who wished to honor her in some small way could just do something that was kind, brought happiness to someone else, or maybe made the world a bit better in some way. Examples she gave included a donation to your favorite charity, volunteering an hour or two, or simply taking the time to drop a card or letter to an old friend or someone you love.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
