Leta was born on November 2, 1934 in Childress, Texas to J.D. and Oleta Richburg. She grew up in Ft. Sumner, NM and attended Ft Sumner High School. Parents homesteaded land east of Ft Sumner in Dunlap, NM. Subsequently, she moved to Roswell, New Mexico and met Robert Calloway Stevens whom she married and had two children, Cynthia (Cindy) Scarlett Stevens and Robert (Bob) Doyle Stevens.
She always appreciated a value and spoke of the days in Ft. Sumner, NM when she paid 15 cents for lunch at high school and 10 cents at a local movie theater.
