Leonard Leroy Sutherland, Jr., a respected Geophysics Engineer and resident of Midland, Texas since 1981, passed away on November 26, 2013 at Lamun-Lusk Sanchez Texas State Veteran’s Home in Big Spring, Texas following an eight year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.A memorial service will be held graveside at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, Texas at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 30, 2013.In addition to his wife of 32 years, June Galbraith Sutherland, Leroy is survived by his daughters, Suzanne Allen of Sandia Park, New Mexico, Patty Konicke of Plano, Texas and his son, Jody W. Sutherland of McKinney, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Sue Conrad of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Step-son, Joe M. (Mike) Galbraith and wife Judy of Midland, Texas, four granddaughters, two step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Leroy was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Leroy Sutherland, Sr. and his mother, Zaida Garrett Sutherland.Leroy enlisted in the United States Navy in May 1943, serving his country in the South Pacific on the Destroyer USS Dortch, attaining the rate of FCO 1st Class prior to being honorably discharged on November 29, 1945.Leroy also realized many successes beyond his military service. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended Kilgore College, playing football in the “Little Rose Bowl” and earning himself induction into the Kilgore Rangers Hall of Fame. Leroy completed college with a degree in Geophysics Engineering from Tulsa University. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying football, baseball and basketball. Leroy had a great love for the game of golf, actively playing until 2005.Leroy dedicated his civilian working career to Schlumberger Oil Well Service for 28 years and his hard work afforded him early retirement at age 57 in 1981. 1981 was also the year Leroy married June (Galbraith) Sutherland and relocated to Midland, Texas. Leroy and June traveled extensively, always returning home to Midland until becoming a resident of Lamun-Lusk Sanchez State Veteran’s Home.Memorials may be directed to SPCA of Midland and the Salvation Army.,
