Leonard (Len) Barrett, 81, of Midland, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Hospice Inpatient Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, Thursday, January 15, 2009 at the funeral home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00am, Friday, January 16, 2009 at First United Methodist Glass Chapel in Midland with Dr. Tim Walker and Rev. Jan Reed, officiating.Honorary pallbearers will be the Fellowship Class of First United Methodist Church.Len was born May 3, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan to Rose and Ernest Barrett. He served in the United States Navy from May 1945 to August 1945. He also attended Albion College in Albion, Michigan for a year. He married Shirley Spencer on August 28, 1948 in Detroit. Len retired after 31 years from Pipeline Inventory for El Paso Natural Gas Company in April 1983. He and Shirley moved to Midland from El Paso in December 1997.He was a member of the Downtown Lion's Club, involved with eyeglass recycling, the YMCA and RSVP. He was involved in the Methodist Men's group in El Paso, Boy Scouts of America, as a troop leader and he coached Little League baseball for eight years. He was also a member of the Go-Karting Association. Len and his sons participated in multiple go-kart races throughout the country and won many trophies.Survivors include wife, Shirley of Midland; son, Gerald George Barrett of Austin; son, Edward Charles Barrett and wife Marilyn of California, Maryland; son, Victor Lynn Barrett and wife Myra of Sevierville, Tennessee; daughter, Sally Barrett Reed and husband Tommy of Midland; sister-in-law, Marjorie Barrett of El Paso; cousin, Josie Cooper and husband Alan of Tsawwassen, BC, Canada; grandchildren, Carolyn Putnam, Beverly Neeley and husband Jim, Amy Martin and husband Mick, Brian Barrett and wife Mandy, Erin Armstrong and husband Zach, Jennifer Barrett, Michelle Dunahee and husband Matt, Stacy Burnett, Becky Burnett, Spencer Reed and Katherine Hird and husband Tim; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesse Barrett and Phil Barrett, his dad, Ernest Barrett and his mother Rose Jackson Barrett.Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church, 300 N Main ST, Midland, TX 79701 or to Hospice Midland, PO Box 2621, Midland, TX 79702.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
