Leona Elluwane Newberry Hightower, 92, of Houston, formerly of Stanton, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, in Houston. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, March 30, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Stanton with Rev. David Harp, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton. She was born on January 14, 1917, in Mt. Vernon. She married Prentiss Hightower on October 17, 1934 in Clearwater, Texas. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1989. She and her husband spent most of their years, from 1941 to 1989, in Stanton, where they owned a laundry until 1976. Leona then worked in healthcare facilities until her retirement. She was active in the First Baptist Church in Stanton until she moved to Houston in 1997. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #409. Survivors include two sons & daughters-in-law, Don and Eugenia Hightower of Mansfield and Lynch and Sandy Hightower of Humble; a daughter & son-in-law, Brenda and Jon Snider of Houston; 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and two sisters, Cristell Gossage of Texarkana and Winnell Shreck of La Marque. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Ida Newberry; and two sons, Lendon and Gaylon. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbreath Funeral Home of Stanton. To all of Ms. Hightowers family; We would like to express our sympathy to all of you. When we first moved to Stanton Mrs. Hightower was one of the first ladies that I met. I had to use the laundry until I could get a washer and dryer, she was so nice to me and my two small children. She was always so willing to help me out in any way she could. She kept the laundry clean so I didn't mind going there at all. She was a dear sweet lady and we know she is in a much better plac enow. Love and prayers, The Stanley's
