Leon H. Schroeder, 93, of Big Spring, died on Thursday, November 20, 2003, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, November 23, 2003 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rev. Roger Huff, pastor of Community Hope Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, November 24, 2003 at the Aspermont Cemetery, Aspermont with Rev. Jim Reinbold, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Aspermont, officiating.Mr. Schroeder was born on June 20, 1910, in Lubbock, Texas to Louie H. Schroeder and Alma Helwig Schroeder. He married Ernestine Herring on September 20, 1943 in San Diego, California.At an early age Leon moved with his family to Sagerton where he attended school, graduating from Sagerton High School. During the depression he worked in construction and farmed along with anything he could do to make a living. In 1939, he moved to Abilene and worked for Camp Barkley as a finish carpenter. After the camp closed Leon was transferred to the fire department and then was transferred to Pyote Air Force Base in 1949. He served part of the time as assistant fire chief at Pyote and then transferred to Webb Air Force Base until retiring in 1969.He served in the United Sates Navy during World War II and was a carpenter at San Diego until being stationed on a mine sweeper. He was a christian and a life member of the VFW, American Legion, AARP and the National Association of Federal Employees. Leon was an avid sportsman, fisherman and hunter and an expert gunsmith and clock repairman. Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Schroeder of Big Spring; three brothers, Murry Schroeder of Abilene, J. C. Schroeder of San Angelo and Lloyd Schroeder of Corsicana; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Cecil Schroeder and Willie L.
